26th May 1918.

Charles George William Paine was the husband of Margaret S of 26 Westbourne Avenue, Gateshead.

He was living in Bermondsey, London when he enlisted with the 4th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment on 12th August 1907. He re-enlisted with 11th Battalion, Prince of Wales’s Own West Yorkshire Regiment. Charles was promoted to Lance Corporal in June 1915, but after a trial on 20th October 1916, for drunkenness at Etaples, where he was found guilty, his rank was reduced. He was once again promoted to Lance Sergeant in March 1917.

He served in India, Malta and France and was slightly wounded twice and suffered rheumatism through active service. Charles was later wounded in the right knee. He was eventually sent home in April 1916, due to a heart condition. On 11th August 1917 under Army Order II, King’s Regulations, Para B, 392(xvi), Sickness, he was transferred to base, before being discharged on 24th October 1917.

He was awarded the Silver War Badge on 13th November 1917.
