James enlisted on 12th December 1915 and was attested the following day. He was posted to the 3rd Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers and mobilised soon afterwards. He was absent for 15 days between 9th and 23rd December 1916. James was posted to 1st Battalion (N.F.) on 4th January 1917 and then the 20th Battalion, before joining the 20th (Service) Battalion, Tyneside Scottish in Boulogne, France on 12th January. He sprained his right ankle on 16th January and spent time in the field hospital. He re-joined his battalion on 24th only to then sprain his left ankle on the same day, where he was transferred to No.1 Casualty Clearing Station. He was shipped home to England and was posted to the Depot Battalion in Newcastle upon Tyne on 7th February 1917. He re-joined the Depot Battalion on 4th June 1917 and was moved to Alnwick on 7th June, before being transferred to the Reserve Unit at East Boldon on 5th October 1917. James was eventually transferred to the A.S.C. in November 1917 and joined 348th Motor Transport Company at Larkhill the following February. He was discharged on 20th September 1918, as ‘no longer fit for duty’. He was awarded the Silver War Badge on 18th September 1918.
