In Newcastle (St. John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of 16/571 Serjeant William Mair serving with the 16th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, who died 12/07/1916.

The headstone reads:

In loving memory of
Margaret Mair
beloved wife of
Andrew Mair
who died 26th April 1909, aged 57 years,
also William
only beloved son of above
Segt. 16th N.F. wounded in France, 1st July 1916,
died at Woolwich, 12th July 1916, aged 25 years,
also Margaret Jane
beloved daughter of above
died Nov. 1880, aged 3 years and 3 months.

William was born at Newcastle upon Tyne in the second quarter of 1881 to Andrew Redford and the late Margaret Mair (nee Rutherford). According to the 1911 Census the family were living at 95 Hartington Street, Elswick, where William’s occupation was that of ‘grocer’s assistant’. William enlisted at Newcastle upon Tyne, serving with ‘A’ Company of the 16th (Service) Battalion. William was a witness in a Court-Marshall case against fellow soldier Frederick William Reid, at Cramlington in 1915.
