Leslie was born in the fourth quarter of 1921 at Newcastle upon Tyne to George and Margaret Knox (nee Willis). He was the husband of Helen Forsyth Knox. He was attested with the Royal Artillery in 1941 and then transferred to the 9th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.

Leslie Knox is not remembered on a local War Memorial but is named in the Book of Remembrance, 1939-45, Durham Light Infantry at Durham Cathedral D47.014 page 92
