William was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, the son of John and the late Jane. He was the husband of Jane Hannah (nee Tait), whom he married in the fourth quarter of 1907. They lived at 8 Villa Place, Newcastle and according to the 1911 Census, he was employed as a packer for a furniture company. William served with the 3rd Battalion and originally served as (5280, Private, 4th Battalion) Durham Light Infantry; enlisting in March 1896 as a 20 year old soldier.
