Robert was born at North Elswick, the son of Thomas and Agnes. He married Martha (nee Ford) at Gateshead in the second quarter of 1903. They had three sons and a daughter and lived at 32 Hull Street, Newcastle.
Robert enlisted at Newcastle with the 16th (Transport Workers) Battalion and was formerly (3311, Private, Northumberland Fusiliers).
