Matthew was born at Easington Lane, Co. Durham, the middle son of six brothers and two sisters, of John and Elizabeth Heslop, 12 Duncan Street, Murton Lane, Hetton le Hole. He enlisted at Sunderland and served with 1st (Reserve) Brigade and also (323091, Private, Labour Corps).
Matthew died at home, aged 31.
