In Bazentin-le-Petit Communal Cemetery Extension is the Commonwealth War Grave of 1094 Lance Serjeant James Hardy, serving with the Royal Army Medical Corps who died 16/09/1916.

In Newcastle (St. John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

Sacred
to the memory
of
Mary
beloved wife of
Matthew Hardy
who died March 4th 1924,
aged 61 years,
also of their son
James Hardy, Sergeant R.A.M.C.
who fell in action in France,
Sept. 16th 1916, aged 25 years
also of the above
Matthew Hardy
who died January 14th 1932.
Until the day break.

James was born in Whickham, the son of Matthew and Mary, 99 Gloucester Road, Newcastle upon Tyne. He enlisted in Newcastle with the 1st (Northumbrian) Field Ambulance and achieved the ranks of Corporal and Lance Sergeant. He was killed in action and is buried at Bazentin-le-Petit Communal Cemetery Extension, Picardy, France.
