William Patrick was born in Newcastle upon Tyne in the 3rd Quarter of 1911, the son of Robert and Annie (nee Allan) of Newcastle upon Tyne. He served in the Merchant Navy on board S.S. “Ocean Vintage” (Middlesbrough).
According to the Electoral Registers for 1926-30 he lived at 62 Wellington Street, Newcastle in St. John’s Ward with his mother and siblings but with no mention of his father.
He did travel to New York in 1942 on board USS Betelgeuse, a US attack cargo ship.
