In Newcastle (St. John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:

loving memory of
Ellen France
died Nov.7th 1943, aged 78 years
also William, husband of above
died Mar. 16th 1946, aged 79 years
also their son William
killed in action, April 28th 1917
aged 22 years
also their eldest daughter Annie Elizabeth
died Jan. 13th 1956, aged 64 years.
William was born and enlisted for service in Newcastle upon Tyne. He served with the 8th Battalion before being transferred to the 25th Battalion (2nd Tyneside Irish). He was killed in action in France and is listed as one of the missing on the Arras Memorial (Bay 2; Course G; Stone 10).
