In Newcastle (St John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of:

W. Ellwood
Tyneside Irish N.F.
12th June 1919, age 40.

William was born in Cumberland in 1879. He married Rose Ann Graham in the third quarter of 1908 at Newcastle upon Tyne and they lived at 8 Monk Street, Newcastle.

According to the 1911 Census they had lived at 18 George Street, Westgate, Newcastle along with their three sons and one daughter. William was employed as a general labourer.

He served with the 25th Battalion (2nd Tyneside Irish – B Company) before transfer to 30th Depot Battalion. He enlisted on 11th November 1914 and was discharged on 11th July 1917. He had a number of charges against him for being A.W.O.L. and appeared in court on several occasions.
