In Newcastle (St John Westgate & Elswick) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of:

J.B. Darley
Deck Hand, RNR 149/SD
H.M. Trawler “Lysander II”
16th September 1916, age 43.

John Barrett was the only son of Dr John B and Mary: husband of Hannah Nicholson Clark (formerly Darley), 2 Stokoe Square, Dunston. According to the 1911 Census the couple lived at 28 Seaham Street, Westgate, Newcastle upon Tyne where John’s occupation was listed as a painter.

Lysander was a hired trawler, built in 1903, and Hull registered, being renamed in 1915 to Lysander II. It was brought into service in August 1914 and was de-commissioned in 1919; operating as a minesweeper during that time and was armed with 2no. 6 pounder guns.

John was drowned at sea.
