In St.Nicholas Churchyard is the Commonwealth War Grave with a private headstone of Second Lieutenant H. Algar serving with the Royal Engineers who died 12/04/1917.

The headstone reads:

Horace Algar
of Norwich,
Lieut. R.E. died April 12th 1917,
aged 27.
"Duty done".

We have received photos of a penknife which has the name "H. Algar" incised in it. See the attached photograph. The present owner found it in her late father's possessions and will happily hand it to a member of the family. Please contact janet@newmp.org.uk if you know anything about it.

Horace Algar is remembered in Newcastle on NUT081
