In The Mammoth Book of War Diaries and Letters: A collection of Letters and Diaries from the Battlefield (Jon. E. Lewis, Editor, 1998, Running Press, ISBN 0786705892) is a very short paragraph which tells how Capt. Treble was in a shelter which took a direct hit.

Carole Fife has provided the following:

James is one of only a handful of men on the memorials in Bedlington who was an officer.

James was born in Easington, Co. Durham in 1883, the third son of six children to James and Mary Treble. His father had been born in Malta, which indicates a possible military connection for James's grandfather, but his family were all involved in education.

In 1891 the family were living at Coach Road, Bedlington and James snr. was a school master, possibly the head master of the East End Board School which existed about that time.

In 1901 the family were living in High Street Bedlington, so James snr. may have moved to a larger school, and James's elder sister was working as an assistant school mistress.

In 1911 James and Mary and their family were living at 2, Rectory Terrace, Gosforth, as James had become Assistant Secretary to the Education Committee, but James Noel (then 28) was working as Second Master in Richmond House at Wellington School in Somerset.

James Noel Treble is remembered in Bedlington on B15.20, in Gosforth on G9.06, G9.21, G9.40, and G9.63 and in Morpeth on M17.06 and M17.12
