Newcastle Daily Chronicle 03/02/1919

The Newcastle Daily Chronicle, 03/02/1919 reports:

"£100 War Bond for saving his officer son.
An interesting incident showing a father's gratitude was recorded at the annual meeting of the Gosforth (Central) Men's Adult School. One of the members – 2nd Corpl. E.N. Fleck – who has returned from Germany as a prisoner of war, has received a communication from an officer’s after intimating that he was purchasing a War Bond for £100 as a thank-offering for the safe return of his son, and also in recognition of the heroism and bravery which 2nd Corpl. Fleck displayed on the battlefield, and which eventually saved the young officer’s life. During the retreat in March of last year, when the German’s overran the British lines, 2nd Corpl. Fleck, seeing that a wounded officer with a leg shattered, was likely to fall into the German hands, carried him with great difficulty for some considerable distance into a place of safety, notwithstanding that the Germans were putting a tremendous fire over, and also that the enemy were within rifle range. Having carried out his task, Fleck was taken prisoner. On his return from Germany the officer’s father determined to show his appreciation, and after securing 2nd Corpl. Flecks’ address, presented him with the above-named sum.”
