John Metcalfe Crosby was the eldest of John William Crosby, of 28 Hutton Avenue, West Hartlepool, and of Lightwoods, Egglescliffe, Shipowner, and his wife, Elizabeth, daughter of the late John Metcalfe of West Hartlepool.
He was educated at at Rossall School; entered his father’s office, Messrs. Crosby, Magee and Co., Shipowners, West Hartlepool, in 1907; prior to the war he was a lieutenant in the Durham Royal Garrison (T.F.) Artillery, but enlisted as a Private in the Honourable Artillery Company in February 1916.
John served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders, and was killed in action 24 July 1917, by a machine-gun bullet, while out with a wiring party near Mory. He is buried there. He was unmarried.
