Donald Ord Ross

Second-Lieutenant Donald Ross, Cameron Highlanders, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Ross, of Stockton Road, West Hartlepool , served his apprenticeship at the Central Marine Engine Works, West Hartlepool, and was at sea for about three years.
When war broke out he was assistant manager at Messrs. Smith’s Dock Company’s High Docks, South Shields. He enlisted as a private in the Northumberland Fusiliers, in September, 1914, rose to be gymnastic instructor, and after twelve months’ service as sergeant in France was given his commission.
A keen athlete, 2nd Lieut. Ross was at one time a prominent member of the Neptune Amateur Boating Club.
The chaplain of the battalion, writing to his parents, described him as one of the finest officers in the battalion as he was one of the keenest."
