The Illustrated Chronicle 04/01/1916 carries a short obituary:
"West Hartlepool Boy makes the Great Sacrifice.
Pte. Wm. Gibbon, 14th D.L.I. of West Hartlepool, is probably the youngest British soldier to sacrifice his life in defence of his country during the present war. An old St. Aidan's school boy, Gibbon entered the Army in February last, just after attaining his 15th birthday.
He went to the front in September. When his parents talked of endeavouring to secure his discharge on account of his youth, the young hero intimated that if they did so he would join the Navy. In a letter to the bereaved parents, William Gibbon's commanding officer says that the lad's conduct has given him good grounds to deplore his early death."
He is remembered at West Hartlepool on W111.09 W111.10 and on W111.54 where his name is shown as ‘Gibbin’
