NER Railway Magazine 1916 page 53, reports:

"Sgt, William Ernest Grayley, Serial Number 8899, has been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for work on night patrol duty in Gallipoli. It is stated that on one occasion, when wounded, he lay out all day, but got safely back at night.

Prior to the outbreak of war Mr Grayley was employed in the Dock's Engineer's Department at West Hartlepool as a gang platelayer and, being an army reservist, was called up at the outbreak of war, and proceeded to France with 2nd Battalion of the Yorkshires. He resided at 15 Carr Street, West Hartlepool, and was a former pupil of the Oxford Street Boys School. He also attended the Westbourne Methodist church.

While serving in France he contracted pleurisy, and, after recovery, was attached to the 6th Battalion, then serving in the Dardanelles, and, after performing the service which won him the D.C.M., he was shot in the knee by a Turkish sniper and invalided home.

Having recovered, he was again sent out, this time to Egypt".

He is remembered at Hartlepool in H115.30, at West Hartlepool on W111.25, W111.54, W111.59 and on the York Railway Memorial.
