His address was 2 Leicester Street, West Hartlepool, Durham.

John was in the West Yorkshire Regt before being transferred to the The York and Lancaster Regt. (Hallamshire Battalion). He was Batman to Sgt. Major Morton; both were killed on the 25th June 1944 at Fontenay Pesnel.

"The Battalion HQ was in farm buildings up on the road near the church had been evacuated when it was stonked and barns caught fire. It is thought that this is where CSM Stanley Morton was killed and his batman."
