A loved one sleeping.

Sgt. Robinson was serving with 578 Squadron. He was a crew member of Halifax III LM348 LK-X which took off from Burn on a mission to Stuttgart. On the return journey the fuel ran out and the engines started to misfire. Four men baled out but the rest died in the crash near Biggin Hill.

On the night of 15-16th March 1944, 43 bombers, with an average crew of 8, who were sent on the mission to Stuttgart were lost. Some men survived, others were taken prisoner, but most died. Another six aircraft on a raid on Amiens were lost.

Charles Helmrich has submitted the following:

My uncle Sgt Bell (Engineer) was on the same flight and happily survived the flight.

If you search wikipedia for 578 Sqn RAF you will see a photograph a Halifax Crew presumably LM348 LK-X circa 1944.

My uncle is in the photograph but it names the wireless operator as Sgt Ernie Williams (Back row 3rd from the left)

Thomas James Robinson is remembered in Hartlepool on H115.41, in West Hartlepool on W111.17 and W111.55, in the list of 1939-1945 Military and Civilians and in the RAF Book of Remembrance
