William Gordon Avery, Adjutant to the Salvation Army who died 16/12/1914.

The following report appeared in the Gainsborough News, Lincolnshire, 25/12/1914:

A memorial service was held at the Salvation Army Barracks on Sunday night in consequence of the death of Adjutant Avery, by shells hurled by the Germans in Hartlepool. The Band played the Dead March from Saul from the Market Place to the Barracks. Adjutant Avery was for some years stationed at Gainsborough.

The rank of Adjutant that was held by Mr. Avery is in relation to the Salvation Army.

The Newcastle Journal17/12/1914 carried a brief mention as follows:- Adjutant Avery, of the Salvation Army, was killed, his house being completely wrecked.

Sunderland Daily Echo and Shipping Gazette 18/12/1914 carried another brief entry about W.G. Avery, Thomas Ray identified William Gordon Avery as the Salvation Army adjutant commanding the Hartlepool Corps. He lived at 7 Victoria Place at Hartlepool, and his house was pretty well blown in from the front. The adjutant evidently just got of bed.
