The Hartlepool Mail 19/03/1941 reports:
"Mr. and Mrs. W. Staunch, of 3 Smith Street, Hartlepool, whose son, Aircraftman John Staunch, was officially reported missing on March 4th, have now received a letter from his group adjutant stating that he must be presumed dead. A letter from his commanding officer expressing the sympathy of all ranks, comments highly on his ability and devotion to duty, and these sentiments are endorsed in a letter from the group chaplain. Aircraftman Staunch, who was 21 years old, was a former pupil of Galley's Field School and Henry Smith Secondary School.
Before he volunteered as a wireless operator-air gunner in the R.A.F. he was employed in the commercial office of Messrs. Richardsons, Westgarth and Co.Ltd. He was also actively associated with Hartlepool Independent Church, Brougham Street, where a memorial service is to be held on Sunday, March 23, following the evening service."
He is remembered in Hartlepool on H115.08, H115.09 and H115.44 and the List of Military and Civilian Names
