Flight-Sgt Clough was killed when Vickers Wellington III X1663 KO-J of 115 Squadron was lost on a daylight mission to bomb the Dortmund-Ems Kanal near Lingen. The Wellington was shot down by an FW-190 fighter of JG1, flown by Uffz. Kurt Knespel, and it crashed at 18.02 into the Ijsselmeer. W. R. Chorley in Bomber Command Losses 1942, page 228, records "F/S Parker RCAF died in the attack, and F/S Clough was last seen, using a fire extinguisher, bravely trying to put out the fire which was raging inside the fuselage."
