John Wardle Dixon had resided at 207 Taylor Street, South Shields, and prior to the war he was employed at St Hilda's Colliery.
His mother received a letter from his Commanding Officer which stated "that he was always a good soldier and will be greatly missed by his comrades. He was hit while taking part in a highly successful attack, which caused great loss to the enemy, and won considerable honour for the battalion he belonged to."
