On the Tower Hill Memorial is the name of 2nd Mate John Lawrence Hunter, serving with the Mercantile Marine on S.S. Lodaner, who died 14/04/1918.

In Westoe Cemetery is a family headstone which reads:-

In loving memory
of
Barbara Hunter Smith
who died Dec. 30th 1906
aged 71 years
Also James Lawrence Hunter
grandson of the above
lost at sea through
enemy action April 1918
aged 21 years
Also Robert Hunter
Master Mariner
father of the above
who died March 4th 1927
aged 71 years
also Lawrence Frank Letouze
grandson of the above
who died June 18th 1936
aged 10 years
Also Mina Ethel Hunter
who died Nov. 5th 1946
aged 51 years

And cast our crown at Jesus feet

S.S. Lodaner was sunk on the 16th April 1918, by U-Boat UB-73 i.e. two days after John Hunter’s death. Is there a discrepancy in the dates or did John Hunter die from a different cause?
