On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 27/1001 Private William Hollands, serving in 'B' Company 27th (Tyneside Irish) Service Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

William was the son of Mr and Mrs Hollands, 1 Johnston's Hill, and was employed by Readheads as a blacksmith.

William Hollands is remembered in South Shields on S86.039 and S86.130
