Pensions Hospital Newcastle

The Yorkshire Post 01/01/1925 reports:-
The death has occurred at War Pensions Hospital, Newcastle, of Major Robert Crone, T.D.. veterinary surgeon, aged 55, who served in the South African War and the Great War. Major Crone, whose home was at South Shields, was the seventh son of the late Mr. Stephen Crone, of Killingworth Hall. Killingworth. Northumberland, agent tor Messrs. Bowes and Partners. Served various theatres war with veterinary service, and had twenty years' connection with the Volunteer and Territorial Force. His health broke down as a result of his war service, heart trouble being the cause death. Major survived by widow, one son. and three daughters

The Late Major J.R. Crone
Military Funeral Westoe Cemetery.
With full military honours, the remains of the late Major Joseph R. Crone, T.D., R.A.V.C. (T.A.), were interred yesterday in Westoe Cemetery, South Shields. Major Crone was an officer of the 74th Northumbrian Field Brigade. R.A. (T.A.). and the funeral was attended a large number the officers and men.
The cortege, which left the Brigade Headquarters in Bolingbroke Street, was joined at the late Major’s residence, 2 Broughton Road, by the private mourners, was under Brevet-Colonel Chapman, C.M.G., D.S.0., commanding officer, and was headed by a firing party in charge of Major H. L. Todd, following which was the St. Hilda Band, playing the Dead March.
The coffin, covered by the Union Jack, was borne on a gun carriage drawn six horses, the officers driving team, in charge of Captain Atkinson, M.C., being Captain Stephenson, Lieutenant J. Meredith, M.C., and Lieutenant Greensitt, and the pallbearers were Major Angus, Major Merriman, Major Peele, K.A.V.C., and Major Robson, D.S.O. Colonel Higginbottom, D. S.0., T.D., was also present. The deceased officer's horse was led behind the gun carriage, and body of non-commissioned officers and men brought the of the procession.
The private mourners were: Mr J. K. Crone, son; Mr Charles Crone, John Crone and Mr Harry Crone, brothers; Capt. J. G. Deans, brother-in-law; Mr T. Oliver, Mr W. Harley, and Mr Irvin. Others present included Chief Constable Scott, Mr G. Merriman. Sir J. D. Carmichael, jnr., Mr J. Newby, the Rev. D. J. Williams, Mr Keith Anderson, and Mr G. A. Dennis. Councillor J. B. Purvis and Mr J. Phillipson attended as representatives of the St. Hilda Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade.
The Rev. C. B. Snell, St Michael’s Church, Westoe, conducted the funeral service, at the conclusion of which firing party discharged three volleys over the open grave, and the "Last Post” was sounded.
Amongst the floral tributes were wreaths from the late Major’s fellow officers and the N.C.O.’s and men of the 74th Northumbrian brigade.
