Medal Index Card

In St.Simon's Churchyard, Simonside, is a family headstone which reads:

In loving memory of George William Frame
the dearly beloved husband of Jane Frame
who died Jan 13th 1932, aged 75 years.
Private George William Frame of the N.F. son of the above
killed in action in France, Sep. 26th 1916 aged 25 years
also Jane Frame dearly beloved wife of the above
who died Dec 25th 1937, aged 79 years.

George William Frame was born at Tyne Dock in 1892. He was the second eldest of three children to father George William Frame, a platelayer on the N.E.R. and his wife Jane. In 1901 they were residing at 33 Lord Nelson Street. By 1911 they had moved to 49 South View Terrace, Green Lane, South Shields. Then to 42 South View Terrace by 1916.

His father died on 13 January 1932, aged 75. His mother died on 25 December 1937, aged 79. [His parents-in-law lived in Marsden.]

George Frame was a colliery labourer at Boldon colliery.

He married Arabella or Bella Urwin 29th June 1912.

Sisters and brother-in-law: Nellie and Fred; Mary and William (in Salonika), niece Pauline; Annie and Thomas (at sea), nephew Thomas.

He enlisted into the 1/8th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. Service number 17300. He had seen action at the Dardanelles, after he arrived on the 22nd September 1915 and was thus awarded the 1914-5 Star.

In 1916 his unit was part of the 34th Brigade, 11th (Northern) Division), He was killed in action on the 26th September 1916 on the Somme, aged 25.

[In trenches opposite Mouquet Farm (25/9). Attack on Zollern and Stuff Redoubts 12.35pm. (26/9) – assault made under a heavy barrage and machine-gun fire from Mouquet Farm and Zollern – many men killed within forty yards of our own front line. Zollern reached. Casualties – c. 449.]

The Durham Miners Association Boldon Lodge presented a small personal Plague in his Memory to George's next of kin.
