Charles was born on 1st April 1879 and was working as a carpenter living with his wife, Alice, at 48, Brabourne Road, Tyne Dock when he enlisted in the Northumberland Fusiliers. He then transferred to the RNVR on 9th September 1914 where he served with the Howe Battalion in Gallipoli until he was admitted to hospital on 7th September 1915 suffering with a septic right hand. Charles died of dysentery at 2.40 am on 5th November 1915 in St. Andrews Military Hospital, Malta.
