Wharton, J., civilian, 1941
South Shields County Borough reported the death of John Wharton, civilian fireman, who died 16/02/1941. He was killed together with AFS Purvis, Renwick and PC Lamb.

This is the incident in which a Heinkel 111P (5J+GP) crashed into Bents Park after hitting a barrage balloon cable having been hit by AA fire. A German crew member (Oberfw W. Beetz) bailed out and landed on the electric trolley bus wires and was electrocuted. It was from this plane that the mine exploded causing the above civilian casualties. The rest of the German crew were all killed: Hptmn H. Styra, Uffz K-G. Brtzsam, Gefr F. Janeschitz and Uffz H. Jeckstadt.
