Mr. Alfred Wood, a Crimean veteran, has died at the age of 79, at his residence at Brunswick Street, South Shields. Deceased enlisted at the age of 19 in the 49th Foot Regiment at Liverpool on Christmas Eve, 1855. He held the Crimean and Turkish medals. He also served in the West Indies and at Malta. He will be interred with military honours at Harton Cemetery on Monday at 2.30.”
