In the Ypres Menin Gate is the name of S/11101 Private Charles John Black Cochrane, serving with the 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders who died 11/05/1915.

Charles John Black Cochrane was born in South Shields on the 21st April 1880, baptised on the 27th June 1880 at St Thomas's Church, and was the son of William Cochrane and his wife Christina, nee Law who married in Fife in 1867.

Charles was educated at Drummond Street School, Edinburgh. He was a Hairdresser.

Charles married on the 3rd June 1900 to a Catherine, (2 Blackfriars Street, Edinburgh), daughter of Owen Airlie, of 49 Drummond Street, Edinburgh, and had a son and three daughters. Francis, born 24th May 1906, Mary Jane, born 8th April 1901, Agnes, born 10th February 1910 and Maria, born 3rd May 1911.

In 1901 they were residing at 6 Gifford Park St Giles, Edinburgh.

They resided at 19, Canongate, Edinburgh at the outbreak of the War.

Charles volunteered and enlisted on the 4th September 1914, and was sent to France on the 29th April 1915. He died of wounds received in action at Neuve Chapelle on the 11th May 1915.
