John Edward, born at South Shields in 1879, was the son of John Samuel Barrow and Elizabeth Libberton.
Elizabeth died 28th December 1897 aged 54 years. In 1901 the family were living at Garden Lane Westoe. John, originally from London, was working as a Quarryman, daughters Georgina, Isabella and Mary were at home, grandson John 17 weeks as well as John (Edward, 21) a baker and confectioner. In 1905 John Edward married Edith Bales. In 1911 he was a warehouseman in a biscuit factory. They were living with Edith's parents at St. John's Institute, Broughton Road, South Shields. There does not seem to have been any children from the marriage.
His father, of 7 Garden Lane South Shields died 9th February 1915. John Edward enlisted at South Shields and joined the York and Lancaster Regiment. He was killed in action 2nd September 1918.
His wife, Edith by then living at 20 Collingwood Street, South Shields, added the inscription "God is love In Him we Trust" to his headstone.
