In Sailly-sur-la-Lys Canadian Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 19/705 Private George Edward Smith serving with the 19th Battalion (2nd Tyneside Pioneers), Northumberland Fusiliers who died 30/03/1916.

George Edward Smith was born 5th February 1894 the son of iron-founder, Edward, and his wife Pleasance Agnes Smith. The family lived at 21 Dean Terrace, but moved in 1902 to 9 Dean Terrace.

George went to Westoe Secondary School in 1902, leaving 7 years later to be an iron founder.

When he enlisted at Newcastle, he stated his address as Maru House, 179, Stanhope Road South Shields.

He served with the 19th Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers, and died of wounds received in action on 30th March 1916.

He is remembered in Harton H104.03 and in Newcastle NUT256 page 220
