On the Thiepval Memorial is the name of 2nd Lieutenant John Maitland Lauderdale, serving with the 1/8th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 17/09/1916.

He was born on the 25th April 1894 in Birtley. His father was an architect. Thomas Herbert Lauderdale, [born 1870, Newcastle-upon-Tyne], and his mother was Margaret Ann Lauderdale, [born Barstairs Kent 1870].

They had six children, Evelyn Maitland, born 1893 at Birtley, John Maitland, Margaret Maitland, born 1900, at 21 Osborne Avenue, South Shields, Edward Alexander Maitland, born 1901 baptised 13th February 1901, Louisa Maitland, born 1908 at 49 Osborne Avenue, South Shields, and Dorothy born 1908 at South Shields.

They moved to 49 Osborne Avenue, in 1905, at South Shields.

John's grandfather William [born Wark 1840], was a Railway employee who was married to Eleanor born 1844.

John Maitland Lauderdale attended Westoe Secondary School from the 24th August 1908.

He left school 14th July 1911.

His father was involved in the South Shields Unionists. He was also an Election agent, and operated from the Central Committee rooms at 8 Beach Road, South Shields.

John Maitland Lauderdale is remembered on the Newcastle Exchange ROH which would indicate that he was in business there.

On the outbreak of war he enlisted as a private with the Northumberland Hussars. He was sent to the front but was subsequently invalided home, during this period whilst recovering from his severe illness, he took his commission for the 1/8th Battalion Durham Light Infantry 20th January 1916 on probation.

He was originally posted missing, but by September 29th 1916 it was confirmed that he was killed in action 17th September 1916 at the Somme. Age 22.

He is remembered at Newcastle on NUT043, NUT052, at Westoe on H104.03, at South Shields on S86.027 and in S86.86 page 9, also at Durham in the DLI Remembrance Book D47.013c page 252, and the Battalion D47.156A Roll of Honour, page 237

Note the CWGC gives a different residence address -son of Thomas H. and M. Maitland Lauderdale, of 5, Swinburne Road, Darlington.
