In Ovillers Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of Captain Joseph Berkley Cuby, serving with the 'A' Company, 23rd Battalion (Tyneside Scottish) Northumberland Fusiliers who died 01/07/1916.

He was the son of Thomas and Elizabeth Mary Cubey, of 25, Osborne Avenue, South Shields.

He attended Westoe School. Prior to the war, he held an appointment in the Government Land Valuation Department. He was a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and was working at some time, at the Northern office in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, at 6 Higham Place.

The deceased officer was a member of the Westoe Rugby Football Club.

He had also lived at West Hartlepool at 59 Arncliffe Gardens.

He received his commission as temporary 2nd Lieutenant in 1914. On the 26th February 1915 he was gazetted to be a temporary Lieutenant, he eventually was promoted to a Captain.

On the 23rd December 1914 he was at Victoria Hall in Sunderland helping to recruit for the Tyneside Scottish, where it was reported that attendance was not very high.

He was killed on the 1st July 1916 aged 32.

It is mentioned in the War Diary of the 4th Battalion that 'Captain J. B. Cuby [Cubey] commanding 'A' Company was killed before he had gone 100 yards'.

On the 23rd April 1917 the Newcastle Journal reported that in the report of the council of the Northern Architectural Association "it is with regret that Captain J. B. Cubey had been killed on active service."
