SOUTH SHIELDS

Barlow, C.W., 2nd Mate, 1918
On Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Second Mate Charles William Barlow, serving with the Mercantile Marine, who died 02/10/1918.

Charles William Barlow was born 1st August 1897 in South Shields. He was the son of Dorothy Jane nee Hepple, of 348, South Frederick St., South Shields, and the late George Barlow.

He was aged 21, onboard the SS Arca, tanker (British-owned), sailing Philadelphia for the UK, torpedoed 40 miles NWxW of Tory Island by U-boat U-118 off the west coast of Scotland (all 52 crew lost).

The Tanker SS Arca was also damaged on the 6th January 1918 by an U-Boat UC-75, 10 miles off Start Point on its route from Southampton to Devonport.

He is remembered at Harton on H104.03 and South Shields on S86.051 and in our List of Ships’ crews
