SOUTH SHIELDS

Armstrong, J.W., 2nd Lieut., 1918

In Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of Second Lieutenant John White Armstrong, serving with the 20th Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 21/10/1918.

John White (Jack) Armstrong was born 18th April 1890, the second son of William and Elizabeth Ellen Armstrong of 80 Egglesfield Road, South Shields. In 1891, they were residing at 244 South John Williams Street. [His father was born 9th September 1861 and died 20th May 1934, aged 72. His mother was born 17th August 1858 and died 17th January 1934, aged 75. There is a family headstone in Harton Cemetery.]

Elder brother called Richard, [born 28th September 1884, died 13th June 1915, aged 30]. He had brothers and sisters.

He was the husband of Alice née Christie of 54 Blagdon Avenue, South Shields. They were married 16 July 1916. Their marriage was registered in South Shields during the September quarter of 1916. His daughter, Jean W. was born in South Shields (June quarter 1919).

John attended Westoe Boys’ Secondary School. He also worked as a teacher at Laygate Lane School, South Shields. John arrived in France 21st August 1918 and died of wounds 21st October 1918, aged 28.
