Wilkinson, T., Fireman, 1918
On the Tower Hill Memorial is the name of Fireman Thomas Wilkinson, serving with the Mercantile Marine who died 16/07/1918.

Born in West Pelton, Thomas was the son of John and Phoebe Elizabeth Wilkinson. He was the husband of Ann Wilkinson (nee Meakin) of 21 Weddle Terrace, Green Lane, Tyne Dock. South Shields. Their marriage was registered in Chester-le-Street during the September quarter of 1905. They had a son Robert Wilkinson who was born during the March Quarter of 1918.

He was a Fireman aboard the SS War Swallow which was torpedoed by UB-50 on the 16th July, 1918. There were 7 lives lost.

The ship was built by J. Readheads and Sons Ltd at South Shields.

He is remembered at South Shields on S86.025 and S86.044 on our List of Ships’ crews
