In Bancourt British Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 3/12171 Private Arthur Campbell, serving with the 2nd Battalion Durham Light Infantry who died 15/10/1916.

He was the son of Mary and the late Thomas T. Campbell of 10 Wenlock Road, Simonside, South Shields. He lived with his mother. Born and enlisted in South Shields. He worked for C.F. Shotton and Son, South Shields (Butchers).

Sister and brother-in-law: Lizzie and J.T. Hodgson of Stanhope Road, South Shields. Sister: Annie. Nieces and nephew: Gladys, Nancy, Polly and Tom of 174 Stanhope Road, South Shields. [His relatives were presented with a gold commemorative medal from the South Shields and District Butchers’ Association.]

On the 13th October the Battalion took over the front line which was called Rainbow Trench, and remained there the following day. At 0515 the battalion took part in a Brigade attack, attacking the German positions at Cloudy and Mild trenches. These were repulsed with heavy casualties. At least 50 Dead, and over 100 wounded. Many of the dead were missing and are on the Thiepval memorial.

He is remembered at South Shields on S86.022 and S86.044
