He was the son of Mary and the late Thomas T. Campbell of 10 Wenlock Road, Simonside, South Shields. He lived with his mother. Born and enlisted in South Shields. He worked for C.F. Shotton and Son, South Shields (Butchers).
Sister and brother-in-law: Lizzie and J.T. Hodgson of Stanhope Road, South Shields. Sister: Annie. Nieces and nephew: Gladys, Nancy, Polly and Tom of 174 Stanhope Road, South Shields. On the 13th October the Battalion took over the front line which was called Rainbow Trench, and remained there the following day. At 0515 the battalion took part in a Brigade attack, attacking the German positions at Cloudy and Mild trenches. These were repulsed with heavy casualties. At least 50 Dead, and over 100 wounded. Many of the dead were missing and are on the Thiepval memorial.
