In Ramscappelle Road Military Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 16/169 Lance Corporal John/Jack/Jacob Levy, serving with the 16th Battalion (Newcastle Commercials) Northumberland Fusiliers who died 08/08/1917.

He was the son of William and Sarah Levy (née Levy) of 67 Frederick Street, South Shields. (Their marriage was registered in Tynemouth during the March quarter of 1886).

His father was born in Germany and was a 48-year old gentleman’s outfitter in 1911. His mother was born in South Shields and was 45 in 1911. They had been married for 25 years and had had six children, all still living. His father’s occupation was given as ‘slipper manufacturer’ in 1901. In 1901 the family lived at 330 Alice Street, South Shields, and in 1911 they resided at 9 Winterbottom Street, South Shields.

Siblings (1901 ages): Joseph (13; born: South Shields – June q. 1887; Pawnbroker’s Assistant), Henry 12; born: South Shields – September q. 1888), Samuel (11; born: Middlesbrough – March q. 1890), Florence (7; born: Middlesbrough) and Julius (4; born: South Shields – June q. 1897).

He was born in Middlesbrough. Residence address was given as 3 Cannon Street Middlesbrough, occupation book keeper. Was also a member of South Shields’ Harriers and Athletic Club. Originally enlisted in Newcastle and had joined up about three years earlier.

He had assisted medical staff with dentistry for some time.

He arrived in France on 22 November 1915 and was thus awarded the 1914-5 Star.

Brothers: Private Julius Levy, Royal Army Medical Corps (Salonika), Driver Samuel Levy, RFA (in Scotland, then India) and Private Joseph Levy, Middlesex Regt. (in England).

He is the brother of Henry Levy
