Rives, P., Rifleman, 1917

In South Shields (Harton) Cemetery is the Commonwealth War Grave of 307217 Rifleman Philip Rives, serving with the 1st/8th (Territorial) West Yorkshire Regiment (Leeds’ Rifles) who died 23/07/1917.

Philip Rives was born in 1891, and was the son of Philip (a dock labourer at Smith's Iron Foundry) and his wife Sarah Ann Rives of 151 Campbell Street, South Shields. In 1911, they had been married for 30 years and had had eleven children, [six still living.] They had formerly resided at 18 Alma Street, South Shields.

His father was born in South Shields and was 51 in 1911. His mother was born at Thornley Colliery, Co. Durham, and was aged 48.

Grandmother: Mary Ann Edwards was born in Wellington, Shropshire, and a 76-year old widow in 1911.

He had a brother, Driver John Rives, 2nd/14th Northumbrian Brigade Ammunition Column RFA, KIA 13 June 1916, aged 22. (3221).

He was born in South Shields. His birth was registered in South Shields during the September quarter of 1891. He attended Holy Trinity School – Admitted, 2nd July 1900, and left, 21st July 1905. John resided at 18, Alma Street, South Shields.

He worked for Burns’ Stores, Ocean Road, a grocer, South Shields. He had enlisted in Sunderland.

Note the last Memorials have the name mis-identified as P. Rivers, when his actual surname is Rives.
