On the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial is the name of 2391 Private Arthur Irwin Bridge, serving with the 1st/6th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (Territorial) (149 Brigade, 50th Northumbrian Division), who died 26/04/1915.

Arthur was the son of Josiah and Mary R. Bridge of 53 Horsley Hill Road, South Shields (and care of the Town Hall, South Shields - ‘Gazette’). Josiah was Borough Treasurer of South Shields. Josiah was born in Manchester and was 46 in 1911. Mary was born in Oldham, Lancashire, and was then aged 44. They had been married for 18 years and had 5 children, four still living.

Their marriage was registered in Oldham during the September quarter of 1892. In 1901 the family lived at 88 Brompton Street, Oldham.

Arthur's grandmother, Priscilla Ann Bridge, was born in Manchester and was a 64-year old widow in 1911. Her death, aged 86, was registered in Prestwich (Lancashire) during the March quarter of 1923.

Brother: George Wilfred (aged 17 in 1911). His birth was registered in Oldham during the March quarter of 1894.Sisters (1911 ages): Gertrude Mary (7; born in South Shields (December quarter 1903)) and Nora Gweneth (5; born in South Shields (December quarter 1905). Sister: Annie Constance (Connie) Bridge (birth registered in Oldham during the March quarter of 1898) – Died 15 (or 18) February 1904, aged 6.

Arthur was born in Oldham (June quarter 1895).

He attended Westoe Boys’ Secondary School, South Shields. He enlisted in September 1914 and left for France 22nd April 1915. (Family Headstone). Arthur was awarded the 1914-5 Star.

The newspaper cutting reads:-

"The above soldier fought in the battle of Ypres from April 25th to 27th April last. Official notification has been received that he has been missing since April 27th. Soldier friends, however, say he was picked up wounded and conveyed to hospital. Any Information which will lead to his whereabouts will be thankfully received by his parents at 53 Horsley Road, South Shields, England."
