Before the war he worked at Whitburn Colliery and resided at 18 Orange Street, South Shields. He was born in South Shields, and had also enlisted in South Shields into the 12th West Yorks. He was reported to have been wounded and in hospital at Ypres. When he recovered from his wounds he was transferred to the 9th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers.
