In St.Stephen's and St. Aidan's Churchyard is a Commonwealth War Grave headstone which reads:

Buried in this churchyard

J.H. Churchward
Engineman, RNR, 1249/ES
H.M.S. "Island Prince"
19th August 1918 Age 44.

His end was peace

He died of illness while on a hired Trawler used for mine sweeping.

James Henry Churchward is remembered at South Shields on S86.039 (where his initials are shown as 'J.K.'), S86.053, S86.081 and S86.082 and on our List of Ships’ crews.
