James was born in Jarrow on 30th June 1886 to Andrew and Jane Patrick.
When he enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve on 11th September 1909 he was described as being 5 feet 6½ inches tall with hazel eyes and a fair complexion. He was living at 52, Hibernian Road, Jarrow and was employed as a fitter in Palmer's Shipyard.
On 28th September 1913 James married Florence Jefferys and their posthumous son, James Andrew was born on 5th October 1914.
James was called up on 22nd August 1914 and was posted to H.M.S. Aboukir. He was lost when the ship was torpedoed off the Belgian Coast on 22nd September 1914.
