Smart, W.H., E.R.A., 1918
On the Chatham Naval Memorial, Kent is the name of 2019 Engine Room Artificer Walter Henry Smart serving with the Royal Naval Reserve in H.M.S. Glory who died 18/10/1918.

Walter Henry was the son of Walter Henry and Florence Smart and was born 04/07/1889 in Bristol. In 1911 Walter Henry was a boarder at 3 Sunningdale Avenue, Wallsend and was an Engineer Marine Draughtsman.

A Draughtsman residing at Jarrow he was Initiated on the 10th October 1913; Passed 2nd April 1914 and Raised on the 27th May 1914 into St Bede 1119 Lodge of Freemasons at Jarrow.

He joined North Shields Royal Naval Reserve District

The Western Daily Press 16/11/1918 reports:-

" died from influenza and was buried at sea on October 18th while on his way to join HMS Glory in Russia aged 29 years late of HMS Royalist"

He was the husband of Jennie Grey Smart of Prospect Villa, James Road, Hereford and his parents were at of 17 Cornwallis Avenue, Clifton, Bristol.

H.M.S. Glory was built by Laird at Birkenhead in 1896. From 1916 she was sent to Archangel as a Guard Ship and remained there until 1919.

Walter Henry Smart is remembered at Jarrow Masonic Hall J2.51, in the Masonic Roll of Honour and on our List of Ships’ crews
