The 1911 Census tells that he was born in Hebburn. He worked as a Chemical Labourer. In 1910 he married Dorothy A. (Dora) Bartram née Sibbald, aged 19, of 61 Rose Street, Hebburn, Their marriage was registered in South Shields during the September quarter of 1910. There was a son, William E. Bartram, 5 months old who had been born in Hebburn.
Private Charles Bartram served firstly with the Durham Light Infantry, service number 64947. He transferred to the 6th Labour Corps, No. 1781 and was killed whilst serving as 21657 37th Company Labour Corps, aged 27 or 28.

Charles Bartram was one of three brothers who all lost their lives. The other two were George and Robert
Dorothy Bartram, widow of Charles, went on to marry George Ferrand Stokoe, another serving Hebburn soldier who also lived in Rose Street.
