Son of Thomas. a chemical labourer and Robina Averill née McCarter of 17 Victoria Road West, Hebburn (1911), and 6 Thistle Street, Hebburn (1901).
His father was born in Co. Derry, Ireland, and was 39 in 1911. His mother was born in Scotland and was 34. They had been married for 17 years – married on 24 September 1894 (South Shields) - and had had nine children, eight still living.
Grandmother: Mary Ann McArthur – born in Co. Derry (73 in 1901 Census; 88 in 1911 Census).Siblings (1911 ages; all born in Hebburn): Andrew (15; Apprentice Butcher), John McArthur (13; SS – September q. 1898), Robert Raeburn (10; SS – March q. 1901), Thomas (7), David Earle (6), William (3) and Robina (7 months).Born in Hebburn. His birth was registered in South Shields during the December quarter of 1894. An Apprentice Moulder in a Shipyard. Arrived in France on 5 October 1915. (1072).
